Rice is a staple food in India, and the country is the second-largest producer of rice in the world. It is also the world's largest rice exporter.

Production
  • India produces about 20% of the world's rice. 

  • The leading rice-producing states in India include West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. 
  • Rice is grown during the monsoon season from June to September. 
     
  • Rice is grown in areas with high temperatures and humidity, and in areas with less rainfall, it is grown with irrigation. 
     
Consumption 
 
  • More than half of India's population consumes rice.
  • White rice is the most consumed variety of rice in India.
  • Unpolished rice is rich in vitamins A, B, and calcium.
Export 
 
  • India has been the world's largest rice exporter since 2012.
  • India's rice exports peaked in 2022 at 22.1 million tons.
Varieties
  • There are over 3,000 varieties of rice grown in India. 
     
  • Some varieties of rice grown in India include Basmati rice, Palakkadan Matta Rice, Ambemohar rice, Joha rice, Pokkali rice, and Kalanamak rice.
